Idiopathic edema or idiopathic lymphedema is a common cause of fluid retention and swelling most usual in women under the age of 50.
"Idiopathic" means that the cause of this condition is unknown. Idiopathic edema occurs in the absence of venous, heart, kidney, or liver disease. It is often associated with diabetes, obesity, and emotional problems. The edema may develop periodically or it may persist over time. Treatment often includes a low sodium and carbohydrate diet. Diuretics do not help and can make it worse.
