What are the side effects of vein treatments?

Always carefully question your vascular surgeon about the safety and side effects for each type of treatment. All medical and surgical interventions carry risks:

  • Sclerotherapy complications (less than 1%): skin discoloration, skin necrosis that will heal overtime, allergic reaction and deep venous thrombosis (extremely rare).
  • Endovenous ablation complications (approximately 1%): skin discoloration, skin burn or necrosis that will heal overtime and deep venous thrombosis.
  • Vein stripping complications (approximately 1%): nerve injury that manifests with leg and foot numbness, bleeding and deep venous thrombosis.
