Heart failure

Congestive heart failure is a chronic progressive condition that affects the pumping power of your heart muscles.

While often referred to simply as “heart failure,” congestive heart failure specifically refers to the stage in which fluid builds up around the heart and causes it to pump inefficiently. Eventually, blood and other fluids back up inside your lungs, abdomen, liver and lower legs. Shortness of breath and bilateral leg swelling are among the first noticeable symptoms. Swelling of one leg only is never related to heart failure.
