Certainly not. An abnormal finding during physical exam of the carotid arteries can be a sound heard with a stethoscope called carotid bruit and if a carotid ultrasound is done this may reveal atherosclerotic lesions (hardening of the arteries).
As long as these lesions are mild, or even moderate, surgery is not required, provided that there was no associated stroke. Your vascular surgeon will recommend specific medical treatment and lifestyle changes, as well as yearly follow-ups.
